Project Brief: To refurbish the house and then build a contemporary extension for family living.
The details that make up the build at Tantallon Road, while not immediately obvious are considerable and took time and skill to form. Polished concrete was used to form the kitchen floor area and then extended outside to give a seamless feeling. The roofing joists, wooden floor and skirting boards are all cut at a 45 degree angle along with the kitchen worktop and the tops to the kitchen cupboards. Simple discreet handles were fitted to the kitchen cupboards and the hallway into the extension was built with flat panels to conceal the entrance to the downstairs loo.
A large pair of sliding doors were built to use as much glass as possible and provide an unbroken view from the back of the kitchen through the garden. The exterior was clad in painted larch and a child’s playhouse built to mirror the exterior elevation.
The project won the ‘Don’t move improve' best extension of the year as voted by the RIBA.
